Michigan Deer Season 2026: Dates, Changes, and Where to Double Check Everything

Michigan deer season is almost here, which means a lot of people are about to wake up at an hour that should be illegal and call it fun. We respect that. Grab a coffee. We will keep this quick and stick to the facts.

The season in 30 seconds

  • Regular firearm season: November 15 to 30
  • December Firearm Season (Lower Peninsula): December 4 to 6. This is the muzzleloader season, now shortened to three days and renamed
  • Early Antlerless and Liberty Hunt: September 12 to 13 (already done for this year)
  • Biggest rule change: the limited firearm zone south of Clare is gone
  • Hunter orange: reported as required during firearm seasons

Those dates come from 9&10 News coverage of the Michigan DNR's 2026 changes. The DNR's own season-dates page was still showing an older year when we checked, so please confirm everything on the DNR site before you head out.

What changed this year

The Michigan DNR says the limited firearms deer zone has been eliminated. That means all legal firearms can be used across the Lower Peninsula, instead of the old split south of Clare. If you hunted under the old zone rules, this is the one to read twice.

On the antlerless side, the DNR says universal antlerless licenses now have use limits that vary by county in the Lower Peninsula and by Deer Management Unit in the Upper Peninsula. The early antlerless season moved to the second weekend in September. The late antlerless season now starts the Monday after the December firearm season and runs through January 1. The extended late antlerless season and the January archery season are eliminated, and the Upper Peninsula antlerless access permit drawing is gone.

Deer harvest reporting is mandatory in Michigan, according to the DNR. Licenses can be bought through the DNR's Hunt Fish app, which is also where eHarvest tags show up. Yes, your phone is now part of your hunting gear. Please charge it before you leave the house, not in the blind.

Do you hunt Michigan opening day, or do you wait for the crowds to thin out? What is the first gun you ever shot, and who handed it to you? Tell us below. We read every answer, and the best stories might make it into a future post.

This is news only. It is not legal or safety advice, and rules can change. Always check the official Michigan DNR regulations for your area and your license type before you hunt.
