September Gun Sales Dipped 2.3%. Here's What the Numbers Actually Say
Share
Every month a new batch of gun sales numbers drops, and every month the internet reacts like it is the stock market crashing or the moon landing. Usually it is neither. Let's look at September like normal people.
Quick answer: September 2026 had 1,152,077 NSSF-adjusted background checks, down 2.3% from 1,179,424 in September 2025. Raw FBI checks were down just 0.8%. It is the first time in about eight months that a 2026 month came in lower than the same month in 2025.
First, what is a "NICS check"?
When you buy a gun from a licensed dealer, the store runs a background check through the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System. That is NICS.
The catch: NICS also counts checks that are not gun sales, like some permit checks. So the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) publishes an "adjusted" number that strips those out. Think of it as the raw number with the junk mail removed. It is still an estimate, but it is the closest thing to a monthly sales scoreboard the industry has.
The September scoreboard
| Sept 2025 | Sept 2026 | Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| NSSF-adjusted checks | 1,179,424 | 1,152,077 | down 2.3% |
| Raw FBI NICS checks | 1,858,763 | 1,843,700 | down 0.8% |
So is this a big deal?
Short version: not really. A 2.3% dip is about 27,000 checks nationwide. Spread across every gun store in America, that is roughly the difference between a busy Saturday and a slightly less busy Saturday.
What makes it worth a headline is the streak it broke. For most of 2026, each month beat the same month last year. September did not. One month does not make a trend, the same way one bad round of golf does not mean you sell your clubs.
Why the dip? Nobody knows for sure. Gun sales tend to move with how much spending money people have and how uncertain they feel about the news. Writers covering the report pointed to tighter wallets. We will know more when October's numbers land in early November.
What it means for you
If you are a buyer, a softer month can mean better deals and shorter waits at the counter. Not a promise, just how slow months usually go.
